Arto Chaqmakchian is closely associated with the distinguished artists of the second half of the 20th century who had the civic courage to break away from the officially endorsed framework of Socialist Realism. Through innovative forms and ideas that reflected the spirit of their time, they enriched the development of modern Armenian art.
Chaqmakchian never compromised his artistic principles. While remaining deeply connected to the rich traditions of Armenian sculpture, he also embraced the major currents of contemporary world culture.
Even during his years of creative work in Armenia, Arto's sculptural vision was already clearly defined: the free transformation of forms, their spatial development, the interplay and juxtaposition of dynamic and associative images, all grounded in ambiguity and symbolism.
Since 1976, Arto lived and worked in Montreal, where he reached new artistic heights and gained broader international recognition. The master passed away on October 1, 2019.
